New Dentures: Comfort, Care and the Adjustment Period
New dentures restore missing teeth, facial support and confidence, but feel different from natural teeth initially. Tongue and cheek muscles need time to stabilise the appliance, and speech or chewing requires practice. Starting with small pieces of softer food, chewing evenly on both sides and reading aloud can make the early adjustment period more manageable.
A denture should fit closely without persistent sore spots. Some minor adjustments are common after delivery because supporting tissues respond under function. Never file or bend the denture yourself, and do not use excessive adhesive to disguise poor fit; professional adjustment identifies pressure areas while preserving the carefully designed bite and polished surfaces.
Clean dentures daily with a suitable brush and cleanser, and follow advice about removing them overnight so tissues can rest. Continue cleaning gums, tongue and remaining teeth, and attend examinations because the mouth changes even without pain. Relining or replacement may eventually be needed, while implant-retained options can be considered for additional stability.
